Beyond the Border returns to St Donat’s Castle on the stunning coast of the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales for a weekend Birthday Barnstormer celebrating 25 years of the very best international performance storytelling

Beyond the Border’s Birthday Barnstormer on 9th and 10th June will be a feast of international storytelling across 5 venues featuring fables and myths, music and magic, love stories and laughter, fun and games for children and fairy tales for grown-ups, all in the beautiful grounds of St Donats Castle by the sea.

This year to celebrate Visit Wales’ 2018 Year of the Sea Beyond The Border will have a sea theme.  Artistic Director David Ambrose said; “A major part of our programme for this year is dedicated to Stories of The Sea, from Pirate Tales to Viking Myths to stories of Migration across The Mediterranean.”

“As part of the year of the sea we will be looking at Mediterranean Ancient and Modern stories, with a retelling of the ancient Odyssey by Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden (both winners of the Classical Association Award for their work with Greek myth, in Odyssey) and David Hughes, Head of European Commission in Wales, and Robin Jenkins, CEO of Atlantic Pacific Rescue Boat project will be speaking about current events across the sea.

Some of the finest musicians and storytellers from Wales and the World, including Sweden, Finland, Italy, India, Belgium, Norway and Palestine will be performing at this year’s festival. Artists already confirmed include author Joanne Harris (Rune, Chocolat); Robin Williamson (Incredible String Band); Classical Indian Sufi singer Smita Bellur; award-winning storytellers Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden; author and storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton; Paola Balbi; Markus Luukonen; Torgrim Mellum Stene; Joe Baele; Tom Van Outryve; Cath Little; Tamar Williamson; Michael Harvey; Guto Dafis and more, many more acts over the two-day birthday bash.

The weekend will also include plenty of Welsh myth and magic, with leading Welsh performers telling all four Branches of The Mabinogion, together with talks, film and an exhibition celebrating 50 years of author Alan Garner’s classic children’s book The Owl Service. Among those taking part will be the author’s daughter Elizabeth Garner, together with leading Mabinogion expert Professor Sioned Davies.

Over the past 25 years, Beyond the Border Storytelling Festival has grown to be more than a storytelling festival. It is also an opportunity to experience the best in world food, craft stalls and live music with the mesmerising back drop of a clifftop castle by the sea. As well as indoor performances in the castle’s Bradenstoke Hall and the medieval Tythe Barn, and outdoor shows in the Blue Garden, BTB’s Birthday Barnstormer will be making full use of the brand new Moondance Hall.

Artistic Director David Ambrose said; “It’s been a wonderful 25 years staging an event like this in Wales and we really wanted to celebrate. Our partnership with Atlantic College and St Donats has grown to enable us this year to host a special 2-day Birthday Barnstormer, before returning for a full 3-day event in 2019.”

Beyond the Border Wales’ International Storytelling Festival 25th Anniversary Barnstormer will be at St Donat’s Castle, Vale of Glamorgan 9 & 10 June 2018. Tickets start from day passes £30 and weekend £55. Family Tickets available.
