Beyond the Border is part of a fabulous European Commission Grundtvig funded Lifelong Learning Project. We are working with sister festivals in Sweden, Italy, Greece and Poland and deepening connections that started building through FEST – the Federation for European Storytelling.
This project allows the partners to share approaches to running festivals, and particularly to training for storytellers at all levels. The partners are all interested in how languages can be shared in storytelling, and the meet ups always include experiments with bilingual performances.
In the way of all the best projects, one thing leads to another, and it is as a result of connections Beyond the Border made in Rome with Compagnia Raccontamiunastoria, that Guto Dafis was invited to represent Welsh language storytelling and song at Suns, Peraulis e Musichiis de Minoranciis, a Conference of Minority Languages, linked to the Liet International competition.
Guto returned talking of sharing stories with wonderful tellers; finding parallels to Welsh stories in Friulan (a romance language); discovering how rhthym and energy carry a story across language barriers and making new contacts who want to develop minority language storytelling further. A great success!
